A New Committee

After seven years at the helm of SFNY, Linda Hearn and Laura Mason have sadly decided to step down.

With Laura’s vast knowledge of local and national food history and food publishing worlds, Linda’s love of Italy, grasp of the language and doing things “the Italian way” and their shared passion of all things “slow”, they forged SFNY and have watched it successfully grow into one of the UK’s most thriving convivium.
All SFNY members are eternally grateful to them both for giving them such a lively, active and social group to be part of.

Thankfully they will both continue to be active members, Linda staying on the committee and Laura is continuing to offer her expertise and support. Grazie per tutti.
Staying on the committee with Linda is Sarah Barber, our trusted Treasurer, also a founder member and Liz Merryweather who takes over as Leader. Richard Evans, Michael Hjort, Diana Naish, Sarah Phillip and Caroline Hall will offer continued support and commitment. New faces on the committee to bring fresh ideas and vitality are Valerie Le Cornu, Jennifer Swift, Rosie Eaton and Jonathon Curtoys. The committee is also very thankful of having the on going support of the Webmaster, Wayne Britcliffe, without whom we would have no website or newsletter!

Learn more about us in the next newsletter.

The committee is always looking for additional support from members with event ideas and suggestions, voluntary support at festivals and shows, articles to be published in the magazine or on the website and any other skills or knowledge you wish to share.

Terra Madre and Salone de Gusto 2008

Again an awesome and inspirational four days in October, Turin saw a gathering of colour, culture, language, smells, tastes and visions of the bountious harvest of our worlds food. The third Terra Madre network brought together even more farmers, cooks, food communities, academics and youth delegates to discuss working towards increasing smallscale, traditional and sustainable food production.

The UK was again very well represented from all areas, in all areas. You can now start to read stories from delegates about their TM experiences and discover some of the initiatives that came out of the network workshops on the international website.

In Association with the Soil

Slow Food members are invited to attend the first meeting organised by Sarah West from York Soil Association, who is working towards setting up a local food buying group. This will be an opportunity for those of us passionate about local organic food to set up a food buying co-operative, share ideas about future projects (perhaps a community orchard, allotments etc etc...), plus you can sign yourself up for the chicken buying co-op.

I'm setting up with Swillington Organic farm (www.swillingtonorganicfarm.co.uk).
